Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT) and

Using a Chain to Understand Behavior

August 23, 2017

Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT), developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., was initially designed to treat women with Borderline Personality Disorder.  Despite its initial narrow focus, DBT has been found to work effectively in treating myriad severe and chronic mental health and substance use issues. The modality includes specific skills, functions, and modes of therapy, which include: enhancing capabilities through skills training and acquisition; improving motivation through individual therapy using targeting and behavioral chains; generalization to the environment through planning and using in vivo/phone coaching during crises; enhancing therapist capabilities and motivation for effective treatment through the use of a supportive consultation team; and structuring the environment to allow progress through family and administrative interventions.  This presentation will address one aspect of DBT, a behavioral chain analysis, and how it may be used in clinical settings to help individuals modify unwanted or dysfunctional behaviors.

Learning Objectives

1.       Define the components of DBT and a behavioral chain analysis.

2.       Identify specific examples of how each of the components of DBT may be used within a behavioral chain.

3.       Explore clinical examples of using a behavioral chain and guide attendees through a case example.
